6 Hurt as SUV Slams Into Line of People Waiting for Food, Smashes Salon: Cops

At least six people waiting in line for food were hurt when an SUV driver inadvertently accelerated and jumped a Bronx curb, slamming into a Bronx salon Tuesday afternoon, authorities say.

Five of those hurt have serious injuries but are expected to be OK — this following the 12:15 p.m. accident at East 163rd Street and Prospect Avenue, police said.

They said the driver tried to reverse but, instead, ended up plowing forward into them as they stood in line at a nearby food bank.

A group of officers spent several hours on the scene.

According to authorities, the driver remained on the scene, but was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Witnesses say one of the victims is an elderly woman who was pinned against the car and the building.

Footage posted to the Citizen app showed a heavy emergency presence at the scene, with the back of the SUV wedged in the salon and multiple ambulances and fire engines visible on the street.

The salon was closed when it happened — a time which one would usually find customers sitting down on chairs. The owner, who left with her 2-month-old son, reported locking up minutes before the impact to grab some lunch.

The owner told me she heard a loud boom the moment she locked the door.

“When I turned and saw it was inside my store and I saw people on the floor, like five people, two ladies and two kids and another guy,” Fatou Sow, the owner, said.

Police have not said if the driver will be ticketed or charged in connection to the incident.

City building inspectors were also on the scene, as authorities continue to investigate what took place.
