A police officer was shot late Thursday during a confrontation with a “violent criminal” on the Garden State Parkway, according to the union and governor’s office.
Heavy law enforcement presence flooded the scene near exit 131 near Woodbridge early Friday after the report came in. Details remained scarce by mid-Friday morning, but investigators said the wounded officer was expected to be OK.
There was no immediate word on the suspect from officials, but multiple reports say that the individual also was injured.
Additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available. The New Jersey attorney general’s office is also investigating.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, condemned the violence and offered prayers for a swift recovery.
