Mamdani lead shrinks ‘if' certain candidates drop out of NYC mayor's race: poll

Tootsie Roll revisited a five-decade-long mystery with the release of a refreshed version of its 1970s “How Many Licks” commercial.

This new version, released Monday, features updated animation and voiceovers but stayed true to the original Tootsie Pop commercial released a half-century ago.

The updated commercial was a hit for many fans, with one commenter saying, “this is so well made! No redesign, just keep the same art style but now in full HD animation, it’s cool!”

Most commenters expressed joy in seeing Tootsie Roll’s marketing decision with a simple remake of a classic commercial, but some observant fans called out the minor changes.

“They finally added some clothes on the boy!!!” one commenter added.

The clothes were one of the more prominent changes to the ad, but there were more. Fans also noticed the absence of Mr. Cow and Mr. Fox in the newer, shorter version, jumping straight into the boy’s conversation with Mr. Owl.

The boy’s famous last line, “if there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s a smart owl,” was also extracted in the shorter remake.

Most viewers focused on the wave of nostalgia and excitement they felt reliving a childhood memory in higher quality.

“That ‘crunch!’ sound effect at the end is now even more crisp and satisfying,” one commenter added.

The remake will run from now until Halloween on TV, YouTube and social media, allowing fans old and new to revisit the decades-long mystery — and reminding us all that, no matter how many times we try, we’ll never be able to figure out how many licks it really takes.
