The 2025 Emmys air tonight. How to tune in

A mother was hospitalized and her daughter killed when a man intentionally ran them down in his SUV on a sidewalk in Queens after an argument broke out between the parties, law enforcement sources said.

The mother and daughter were walking down Roosevelt Avenue around 4 a.m. Saturday when surveillance video appears to show the SUV driver launch onto the sidewalk and mow down the victims. The mother and daughter had been walking with a man as well, police said.

Johanny Gomez-Alvarez, 16, had been out at a restaurant down the avenue with her mom and each of their boyfriend’s earlier in the night, according to sources. The mother’s boyfriend allegedly got into a verbal and physical “altercation” with the man who would later drive his SUV into the teen, sources said Sunday.

When the group left, walking on foot down Roosevelt, the 38-year-old driver allegedly got into his car and drove straight at the women. Sources said his SUV pinned the teenager against a utility pole. She died at the scene.

Video shows the SUV speed through the intersection at Roosevelt and Benham Street and mount the sidewalk. After apparently striking the group walking on the sidewalk, video shows the driver back up and speed the wrong way down Benham Street before crashing into a parked car.

Surveillance video apparently captures the deadly scene playout in Queens early Saturday morning when the Chevy Suburban (top left corner) mounts the sidewalk on Roosevelt Avenue.

Police said the driver, 38-year-old Edwin Cruz Gomez, abandoned his vehicle and tried to get away but cops caught up with him.

“I seen across the street, they had him on the floor and he was hysterical,” Tamara Dupree said.

The girl’s mother, 32 years old, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The suspect, identified by police as Edwin Cruz Gomez, faces charges of murder, assault and DUI. Contact information for his attorney was not immediately known.
