Florida man arrested after getting caught driving in reverse on busy road

A Florida man was arrested for driving his car backwards down a busy road last week.

The incident was caught on camera, with the driver taking his silver sedan in reverse on SR 100.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office shared video of the incident on Tuesday. Deputies received multiple witness calls and said they were able to track the car to a Panda Express parking lot.

Deputies stopped the driver, 47-year-old William Murphy III of Palm Coast, after he spun the vehicle around and switched from reverse to drive, according to police.

Murphy said his car had a mechanical issue and “thought the best option” was to drive it backwards to AutoZone, according to police. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said Murphy’s mechanical issues “evaporated when deputies got behind him.”

“I didn’t think that was that bad,” Murphy said on bodycam footage from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. “I wasn’t even swerving or anything like that, or driving fast or anything.”

“You were driving backwards on the road,” a deputy responded.

Deputies arrested Murphy for habitual driving while license suspended or revoked, saying he had 10-plus prior convictions.

Murphy was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later released on $1,000 bond.
