Mamdani dodges question on potential Trump meeting around Knicks Game 3

Mayor Zohran Mamdani didn’t say Thursday whether or not he had plans to meet with Donald Trump when the president comes to New York City next week for the Knicks’ first home game in these NBA Finals.

He did say, though, that they won’t be sitting in the same section for Game 3 on Monday night.

It’s not clear how long Trump plans to stay in the New York area.

When a reporter asked Mamdani whether he would meet with the commander-in-chief at any point during that stretch, the mayor said he, too, would be at Game 3, though “in a very different section of the stadium.”

“We look forward to welcoming any New Yorker who is excited for the Knicks to have that chance to win that championship,” Mamdani said.

As to a potential meeting during the week, that remains unclear.

An email request to the White House wasn’t immediately returned Thursday.

Once a testy working relationship, Mamdani and Trump went on to a sort of “bromance,” finding commonality on housing, urban affordability, and an overall love for New York City

Asked in late May if he’d sit with Trump at a potential Finals game, Mamdani said he’d leave the president to watch the game as he pleased. He also noted their bipartisan alignment in wanting New York to win.

Gov. Kathy Hochul previously dismissed the idea of sitting with the president at the game.

The mayor attended Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals at the Garden alongside New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Trump said he had planned to go to that series, but New York closed it out fast.

Game 2 of the NBA Finals tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET in San Antonio on Friday, June 5. It’s been nearly 30 years since the Knicks were last in the NBA Finals.
