A woman was rescued after falling down a trash chute inside an apartment building in Hackensack, New Jersey, officials said.
According to the Hackensack Fire Department, around 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, crews received a 911 call from Bergen County Communications reporting that a woman had entered the 14th-floor trash chute at an apartment building on 150 Main Street and had fallen to an unknown location inside the chute.
When crews got to the scene, officials said they were initially unable to find the woman.
An investigation revealed that she had fallen down the chute and was stuck in an area filled with backed-up trash on the third or fourth floor.
Officials stated that crews had to use saws to remove panels from the trash chute discharge, while other teams prepared for a possible rope operation or wall breach.

Other crews continued removing the trash from the chute until the woman could be removed feet-first. Officials said it took crews nearly 30 minutes to complete the rescue.
The woman was placed in the care of EMS, officials stated. One firefighter was transported from the scene to receive treatment for an arm injury.
