Video captured some extremely tense moments in Washington Heights, where loved ones of a woman beaten to death in her apartment confronted the man arrested for her murder.
Police escorted 41-year-old Tiliek Thompson out of the precinct on Saturday to screams from the family of 27-year-old Lovay Williams.
The Harlem man was arrested, nearly a week after Williams’ body was found, and booked on charges of murder, strangulation and child abandonment. Contact information for his attorney was not immediately known.
Last Sunday, police were conducting a wellness check on Williams when they found the mother beaten to death inside her home near Amsterdam Avenue and West 156th Street.
Law enforcement sources said the woman’s child, believed to be around 5 years old, was present during what they said looked like a domestic incident.
Neighbors said a mystery person was seen leaving the victim’s unit over and over, holding plastic bags. It wasn’t clear if police believe that person was Thompson.
Williams was a reserved person, according to her neighbors, and was always accompanied by her young daughter, who was seen leaving the apartment building with police officers.
“It’s very distressing for a child that age to see something so horrible happen right before their eyes,” said Anthony Sanchez, a neighbor.
Those familiar with the mother and daughter’s case, like Luz Perez, said they can’t help but feel compassion for the victim and her daughter, who is now living a heartbreaking reality.
“I hope they find him. That poor girl lost her mother, and that’s very sad. She shouldn’t have to go through that at such a young age,” said Luz Perez.
