NJ towns prep for massive winter storm as officials eye possible State of Emergency

Some of the biggest snow totals from the upcoming winter storm expected this weekend into Monday will hit parts of New Jersey. Because of this, local towns are already preparing for the severe winter weather that will hit the region and proving to be an all-hands-on-deck situation.

“This should be a full snow event for us up here with little to no ice being predicted at this time. Not a lot of wind impacts as well,” Fairfield Emergency Management Coordinator Lt. RJ Casendino said. “So it should be a full snow event.”

Because of the impending havoc the weather could bring, residents across New Jersey are prepping as well. Home improvement stores are selling salt, shovels and other winter weather supplies fast as the snow approaches.

Even though it is expected for upwards of 12 inches of snow in tri-state areas, some New Jersey municipalities have reported running low on salt due to an active winter season. This is a concern when it comes to keeping roads clear and safe. However, those local governments said that they expect to put down triple the amount of brine to make up for the lack of salt.

Officials are also relying on the public staying home during the storm.

Fairfield officials also said aside from hoping the public stays home, a priority of theirs is to make sure that every driver, including first responders, can safely get to their destination.

State officials said they expect a State of Emergency to be issued Sunday.
