Will the U.S. walk away with the most gold medals from the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics? Will Team USA challenge for the most medals overall?
We’ll know in a little more than two short weeks.
The first gold medals were awarded on Saturday, going to Switzerland in men’s downhill, Sweden in the women’s skiathlon, and host country Italy in speed skating for the women’s 3,000 meter. Norway and Canada also got on the medal board.
It would take quite an impressive effort for the U.S. to reclaim the top medals spot, both for golds and overall medals. Both of those titles went to Norway in 2022, and it wasn’t all that close of a race. The Norwegians won 16 golds, part of their 37 medals overall.
That was far ahead of the second place finisher, Germany, which had 27 medals overall. When looking at golds, the race was a bit close, as the Germans finished with 12.
The U.S. was third with 25 overall medals, and tied with China with nine golds.
