Dramatic video shows aftermath of massive Long Island City accident; 4 hurt

A multi-vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on Friday saw at least a half-dozen cars banged up, some piled atop each other in a shocking heap of damage that blocked traffic in the area for hours.

At least four people were said to be hurt in the crash, one of them seriously, according to the FDNY.

All lanes of the westbound highway at 27th Street in Long Island City were closed off, the NYPD said in a traffic alert advising people to take alternate routes. It happened at peak commute time, which complicated commutes.

Dramatic video posted to the Citizen app shows dozens of stop-and-go drivers making their way down the highway. One passes the scene of the accident, capturing a literal pile-up — with cars stacked on top of each other. Several of the vehicles appeared completely totaled.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
