A massive, older tree ripped away from a Hell’s Kitchen sidewalk Sunday afternoon, smashing into an Amazon cargo bike and two cars. No injuries were immediately reported.

The tree has been a fixture in the neighborhood on West 44th Street near 10th Ave. for decades.

“We were sitting right here in our living room, and (my wife) was upstairs… and she said, “what was that?!?” neighbor Fasar Hardin told NBC New York. The force of the tree’s uprooting sent a plank of sidewalk aiming diagonally into the air.

“The Parks Dept. was just here. They just redid the sidewalk around the roots of the tree,” said Hardin’s wife, Annie Chadwick.

“It sounded like a bomb going off,” Hardin added.

In a statement to News 4 Sunday, the Parks Dept. said “NYC Parks Forestry crews are hard at work cleaning up damaged trees and debris from the storm. Generally, the cause of tree failure during heavy wind and rain events is due to a combination of factors. Heavy rain can saturate the soil, causing roots to become destabilized; this, combined with high winds, can cause trees to fall.”

“I heard just a loud crash,” said neighbor Eitan Altman. “There’s more severe weather days than this, so I’m pretty surprised that like today’s the day.”

On Saturday, New York City officials were implementing new measures to prepare for potential localized flooding and storm impacts.

News 4’s Charles Watson will have a report on storm damage across our area tonight on News 4 New York at 6:00 PM.
