Long Island Rail Road workers rallied today, looking for support with a possible strike less than a week away.
They gathered in Massapequa, ahead of what would be the first walkout in decades. LIRR unions want a 5% raise in the 4th year of a contract. The MTA is offering three years with a top raise of 3.5%.

“For more than three years, this coalition has bargained in good faith with the MTA,” Kevin Sexton, National Vice President of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, told the crowd. “After countless bargaining sessions, mediation and after two presidential emergency boards, we’re still fighting for something that is very simple, a contract that keeps pace with the cost of living.”
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said Friday that the two sides are closer to a deal, but the unions disagree. Management is also offering lump sum bonuses.

The next formal talks are set for Monday, just five days before the deadline.
