Pentagon under partial shelter in place due to air quality issue

An area of the Pentagon is under a shelter-in-place order because of an “air quality issue” that a system detected, authorities say.

The chief Pentagon spokesman issued a statement Thursday morning.

“The Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants. Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance,” Sean Parnell said. “The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area. Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants.”

The fire department in Arlington, Virginia, said crews, including a hazmat team, were operating in the Pentagon during “a hazardous materials incident.”

No information was immediately released on the potential source of the problem.
