The man who died after his plastic bag got caught in a Brooklyn subway’s closing door apparently wouldn’t let it go, a law enforcement source says, adding that video shows him appearing to still clutch it as the train drags him down the platform and into a wall.
The man, in his 50s, died at the scene of Monday’s rush-hour accident on a Manhattan-bound A train at the Utica Avenue station. He fell and rolled onto the tracks after he hit the wall, but the source says the train had already left the station and he wasn’t struck. His identity has not been released.
According to the law enforcement source, video shows the man walking to get off the train around 5:30 p.m. He has a cane in one hand and carries a plastic bag in the other; the source described it as the type of plastic blue bag one might get from a bodega. The doors close on the plastic bag.
As the train starts to pull away, the man appears to continue grabbing his bag, the source says that video shows, though some of the footage is blocked by people walking on the platform.
He begins to get dragged down the platform, apparently still holding the bag, the source says of the video. As the train accelerates out of the station, he gets dragged to the end of the platform and collides with the wall before rolling to the tracks. It wasn’t clear how fast the train was moving at the time of the collision.
Police have not released the video.
It also wasn’t clear if subway door sensors would have sensed such a thin bag. The investigation is ongoing.
